Columbus, OH
Build Nicer Transit Shelters and Stations to Attract More Riders
Description:

Evidence suggests that transit stations with sleeker designs boost ridership.

A recent study out of the University of Naples compared ridership on two similar lines, only one of which had colorful, recently-redesigned stations. The researchers found that riders were willing to put up with more, including higher costs and longer wait times, at the nicer stations.

The researchers conclude that a station's architectural quality should be an explicit design consideration and should even be compared against other service metrics, including frequency and accessibility, when determining transit improvements.
